Welcome!
Sandra McGarry is a Northern Colorado poet. Her award-winning poetry has been published in local, national, and international journals and anthologies.
Sandra’s first book of collected poems, Some Say Poems, Some Say Life, was published in 1997. In 2019, she published her second book of poems, Wild Sweetness.
Her new collection, Here and Elsewhere, published by Panhandle Creek Press, is due for release on October 6th, 2026.

I drive into where this morning breaks
my heart—yellow light on a blue-black sky
soft as cat’s fur breaking over the pond.
Here geese rise into the wind
form a pattern like a wing itself.
How hunger moves them into light.
A nutmeg-colored dog
long ears flapping
chases the last bird to flight.
I let them go. Take a left
leading to the mountains
astonished they are in light snow.
The world is fracturing
in places I can’t even name.
It’s said the birds are gone from there.
A child plays with a rag doll
fusses with the dolly’s dress
makes pretty—as she says.
“Child,” I want to say aloud,
“How these geese dress the sky,
their loud honks filling the air.”
And if ever pretty and wild
and wonder should be used
in a poem it is now.
